Hats-off to American Express for making such a big push to “shop small” at privately owned businesses on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And hats-off to everyone who followed suit. According to American Express, consumers spent an estimated $5.5 billion dollars at locally owned shops and restaurants.
That is outstanding.
But let’s not stop there. It’s easy to do the one-stop shopping at the major malls and chain stores this Christmas, but in our opinion (and we think in the opinion of many others) the items purchased at the smaller shops make for much more memorable, original and meaningful gifts. So get out there, walk into the cute shop on the corner you’ve been meaning to check out, take notice of the TLC put into customer care, design and handpicked inventory, and splurge.
To those of you shopping local, keep it up. Everyone else, get with the program.
Happy shopping this holiday season!
